Dear Romanian Team,

You may not know it but I have been working on getting this trip to become a reality for almost 4 years. It is an answer to pryaer for me as well as the Richard Wurmbrand Christian School.

Please let their Headmistress, Liliana, know that I have been praying for this trip. Praying that it will open doors between TKCS and RWCS to become great friends in the Lord.

Please do all you can to help them out in any way. Make lifelong friends in the Lord and enjoy your trip. I look forward to hearing your stories, seeing photos on facebook and hopefully going back in another year or two.

Blessings.

Hi everyone, Miss Topham is having a little trouble with the Blog so I am posting her emails for everyone to see...

Day 2 in Romania
Hello to all of you. Please forward this on to anyone that you feel would appreciate it. Today began with us a little bit more rested. The team is enjoying our very nice hotel, the rooms are very much the same as a holiday inn express is in America. We are now jet lagged a bit and we are hungry at odd times. However the food here is WONDERFUL so we don't have to try hard to eat when they serve us, we have eaten two meals served to us by the cooks at the school. Each meal starts out with the most flavorful soup you have ever tasted, simple but wholesome. Then today we had what can be described as a rolled up cabbage egg roll with creamy rice and meat inside. They told us that it is a special meal often served at weddings the Romainia high school students and some teachers ate with us and they all were so excited when they saw the meal, so apparently they are really really pulling out all the stops for us, we feel very taken care of. Then our meal ends with this bread that is a little like our raisin bread at home but it has dried fruit and apple inside it too.

It is now about 3 pm here in Iasi and the team is back at the hotel for a brief rest. We are torn between our bodies need to rest and wanting to be here in Romania and interacting as much as possible. The two travel days and bad timings with the planes, etc has taken a real toll on us. You can be proud of your students because in their tiredness they have been willing to do anything and everything asked of them with no complaining. I so appreciate each one of them.

Today we ran a children's day camp and we had about 30 small children from the ages of 1st grade through about 3rd grade. Then we have some 7th graders and some high schoolers that we had met yesturday come to the school too to help with the day camp. There have been some fast bonds between the older students and our students. This is bringing alot of joy to us and we watch. My only problem at the moment is getting them to stop talking to each other in times when I need to give them instructions (but this is nothing new and a wonderful problem to have) The older Romanian students practiced their English skills alot today by serving as translators to the younger students. I am amazed at their fluency. However they don't always let on to us if they don't understand something so it is hard to tell for sure. Usually we know they didn't understand when they ask the same question again. The one English teacher says that we talk very fast too. The younger children today laughed as we tried to say their favorite colors in Romanian. Alot of the words are similar to spanish so we took turns guessing what color they were trying to say. Verde is green, rosa is pink, negro is black, etc.

The day camp had stations with crafts, bible stories, balloon animals, and then the big surprise at the end was an Easter Egg hunt for them. Boy was that a mob scene. As Peter explained the idea and it was translated to the children their eyes grew bigger and bigger, then we said go . .. and they were off, running over each other in the process. Then when they came back, they did not realize at first that there were gifts inside each one, doubling the fun! It is tradition in Romania to not open gifts while company is still there so it took a bit for us to explain that is was ok we wanted them too.

One child today immediately loved Drew and his guitar and Drew was jamming a bit with it to entertain them when they did their craft, this kid was so content to glue and color all while nodding his head to the beat.

I don't believe any girl left today without giving Becca a hug. She has a real gift with them.

Amy really has a gift with the older students and I think she has already formed a good friendship with one of the girls here.

Kyle impressed a young boy at day camp today with his wrestling moves much to my nervousness. No bones were broken so we were fine.

Jasmine was a hit when she told the bible story with the flannel graph cut outs of the sheep and the shepherd I am not sure who had more fun playing with the figures, the children or Jasmine.

Josh is the go to guy and even managed to master the cross shape we made out of the balloon animals today. I think his fingers must be sore from tying up so many balloons. Also I don't think Josh wants to carry another suitcase around for a long time he has been so helpful with supplies alot.

Peter I mentioned to you before about the egg hunt, he and the Romanian students hid them well. Much to the dismay of the cleaning lady who didn't quite understand why she kept finding plastic eggs everywhere.

Logan was the real hit at a time when the rest of us were running out of steam. At the end of camp we went to the gym and played games. Logan taught them simon says. I have never seen a game of simon says be so competitive and Logan really tricked them alot. They learned alot of English anatomy words at the same time which the English teachers also loved.

We have found that we share a common sense of humor with them and we laugh alot.

Soon we are going to go out with the students again and we are going on a walking tour around a part of the city stopping at a Romanian Restaurant for a nice meal, then I don't know what we are doing . . .. no one seems to concerned about it. Whatever happens will happen . .. when it happens.

That is it for now, finally parents I know you will be wondering about phone calls, obviously the schedule laid out has not worked well because so much as changed due to our late arrival into Iasi. So we will be back to our rooms sometime later this evening (anywhere between 4 - 7 your time) Tomorrow we have a wonderful event planned and I will let your children tell you more so I don't think we will call you on Saturday at all, so perhaps you can hear from your child tonight and then Sunday evening again later. You will not here from us tomorrow at all.

Prayer requests: That we all continue to stay healthy, that we truly get more rest tonight, that the relationships formed here today can grow into something deeper before we leave, and wisdom as we continue to make scheduling decisions, and that as the trip wears on these students truly can see God's Kingdom at work here, and that they themselves might be impacted and that they examine their own spiritual walk.

Day 3 in Romania

Hello again to all of you,

It is now Sunday evening about 8 pm here, about 1 pm your time, Mr. Valdez has just called me using his cell phone, they (him and some of the students) walked to the only place open on this Easter Sunday in Iasi and of course . .. . it would be a McDonald's. I think I must of been asleep taking a long needed rest after a busy and wonderful day.

Friday evening has probably been the highlight of our trip socially so far, We had asked them to take us to a traditional Romanian restaurant. The restaurant we went to was very nice inside and quite famous apparently for their portion sizes. Each meal could feed about 3 people. The Romanian students translated the menu for us when necessary but we have found that we recognize alot of the food words because they are similar to Italian terms that we know. A knowledge of spanish really helps too. We ate to our hearts content. Kyle got the most laughter that evening as we all were sitting around the table with our traditional Romanian dishes, sampling with care and then digging in, Kyle sits there quite content after having ordering Chicken Wings and mashed Potatoes! Raluca, a teacher here, spoke to Kyle later saying she didn't understand why we teased him so much, she often orders the Wings there too for they are delicious.

Saturday was a day here busy with traditional preparations for the Easter Holiday on Sunday. Everyone on Saturday in Romania is at their home, having the shopping all finished, preparing many different dishes for Sunday. The Romanian students that we have become friends with met my students in the morning and they split up and went to different people's homes. My students said they were suprised at the space in the apartments or homes and it is was very similar to our own homes and apartments.

I will let the students describe the food to you. Mr. Valdez especially is the guy to ask about the food, being a chef himself he loved all the recipee details he could get. He got a sweeping video of the smorgasboard laid out before us at the home of Liliana, the headmaster. All of the students have been very adventurous in their eating, trying a bit of everything. Most have found they like all of it.

The afternoon Saturday was spent attending the local football (soccer) game. It was a smaller arena that I had imagined it would be. About the size of our local team baseball arenas. They eat sunflower seeds at the games like we eat peanuts, shells are everywhere. The game had little action and no score so we decided in the fourth quarter to leave before the mob of people left. The moment we placed our feet on the sidewalk outside the arena there was a great shout from the crowd, Iasi has scored. We couldn't of had worse timing. Some of our students went back to catch what they could, the rest of us just listened. Oh well.

I will have to write about Sunday later.

Drew,
A word of encouragement for you and the team. The writer of Hebrew says, "Let your manner of life be without coveting. Be content with what you have, for the Lord has said I will never leave you nor forsake you. So that we may BOLDLY say, the Lord is my helper, I will not fear what man will do to me." I thought of this as we talked about how content those in Romania are with what they have been give by God.

From Romania...

Hello again,

First I must apologize for the lack of my blog skills, I don't know how to go in and add items and the website shows up here in all Romanian and none of us can find the English flag button to translate it. So if you are waiting for the blog, keep waiting.

I did want to give you a brief update on Sunday, Monday, and today Tuesday.

Sunday was Easter and we attended a church that several people associated with RWCS attend it is called the Nehemiah Church. The service was in two parts with a time for us as the team visiting from Romania to share. I was immediately struck by a few things. First, the church looks very much like a smaller church you would find in NJ. There are red chairs and a stage complete with a wonderful sound system, worship team, and power point slides. There was a balcony section to the church as well. The stage was decorated with flowers for Easter.

Our team sat with interpreters from RWCS (the school here) and they translated everything. The pastor was fully aware of our presence and during the sermon paused after every short sentence in order for translation. Imagine that in your church on Easter sunday! For only ten people among a crowd of about 200 people they adapted this for us, we felt very humbled and honored. The rest of the attenders delt very patiently with hearing a constant translation murmer coming from our corner.

The worship songs they sang were familiar and we sang along worshiping in our own language. The RWCS people had practiced with us how to say Christ is Risen, Christ has risen indeed in Romanian so we smiled with recognition and were able to participate in that customary greeting much to the delight of the Pastor.

We sang Lord I lift your name on high, Christ is Risen (up from grave . . . .) and a few we didn't know but enjoyed. The Romanians love to sing and the worship truly was beautiful. Then it was our turn and we started our introduction by saying that the Bible says through the Apostle Paul that we are to be one mind, one spirit, and one body in Christ. We are part of them we just live a very long long way from them. This was recieved after the translation with smiles and laughs as we exaggerated the LOOOOOONNNNG part.

Our short program with the team consisted of Drew walking the church through a short power point of TKCS, then each student introduced themselves and said something about them, then Ray Valdez, Amy, Peter, Drew, Kyle took the rest of the time to lead us again in worship. The drummer of the church here volunteered to play with us. Amy sang a solo song for one part as well which I can tell touched the hearts of the listeners and mine very much so.

After the conclusion of the sermon and communion we visited with the attenders there and then piled in cars and a taxi and off to one of the administrators homes for lunch and games. The food was the same meal we had all helped to prepare in people's homes on Saturday and we dug right in, now in familiar territory. All of us knew what we liked and didn't like. Then we played charades (which is great because it works despite a language barrier) Then we played a game similar to taboo, it was great too. The family that was our hosts we had met before and we have become close with so we had wonderful conversation. The host parents do not know English well at all but their children have all gone through the school here and made wonderful translators for the parents, we don't have trouble communicating at all.

Monday came quick and very early, 6:30 am we packed on a rented coach bus and traveled out into the country of Iasi. We traveled about an hour and stopped for petrol (gasoline) which is 3.55 a LITER!!! (I'll let you practice the math conversion! ) Then we carried on and visited a monestary, a very large dam and lake, and the highlight of our trip was the rocky cliffs the cut into the high hills (mountains really) surrounding transylvania. We stopped at a lake in the middle of these mountains to eat lunch and shop at the craft stores and vendors there. Kyle was enamored with every dracula item he found, Josh got an awesome gift which I personally like too but will no reveal here, I am sure you will see their spoils soon.

We had a very brave bus driver winding around narrow canyon roads and backing up one incline when he got us stuck going around a corner too sharp for the bus, there are no guide rails on these roads at all and very long steep drop offs into the canyon and river below. However I took my cue from the RWCS teachers who had no concerns at all, they said the bus driver is very consciencious and they use him alot for these trips. At one point the traffic was too heavy and we got out of the bus and walked down the mountain on the side of the road that really was non existent. It was perfectly normal for them to have a car and persons walking in the very same space down these roads. I was a little nervous but the cars just move for you and you move for them when you need to and it works. To help you understand how close, when you walked past a car the person in the car with the cigarette hanging out the window had to move their arm or you would be burned as you brushed past. I must say I was happy when the traffic eased up a bit. However the Romanian students here really are so aware of our naiveness and they directed my students very carefully about the proper ways to walk and act. We were in good hands.

Here in Romania if you are in a traffic accident it is up to you to turn yourself into the police. Which our bus driver unfortunately had to do. At one point he brushed too closely to a car and scratched it, the bus driver did not think he did and we in the bus didn't here or notice the scratch and honestly we think the car saw that we were americans and was running a scam because the driver of the car said we could pay him to not report it. However our bus driver drove to the nearest town and turned himself into detention for 1/2 an hour. The rest of us got out of the bus and played soccer in the side street and small park right there. Old men and women of the town and some small children came and watched this us (I think we provided the afternoon entertainment for this small country town).

If your students were not in love with Romania before, they are now because of this trip and the interactions with the students. I really feel this was the day that took us from being visitors to being friends.

That brings us to today, tuesday.

Today was the day we were really here for. Today we worked sharing the message of HOPE and Encouragement to RWCS. We did an elementary chapel in the morning which your students can tell you about, I will only tell you how proud I am to be their leader and to see how God used them today. We then had a very significant tour of the grounds and building, alive now with the students back from break and in their classes. Whenever we entered a classroom immediately everything stopped and the students rise to their feet and continue standing silent and still until their leader tells them to sit again. The respect and honor they gave to us shamed us and caused my team to reflect on our loss of this respect and value on people. We had a wonderful discussion about this and realized that we sacrifice the WHO in life for the WHAT, and also we sacrifice the QUALITY for the QUANTITY.

We heard and saw the plans for the future building, we visited the soccer field to be that is now a fenced in area of cleared out dirt. All of this clearning and work done last summer by the teachers and students. They were blessed unexpectedly by having a contractor in the lot beside them donate the concrete for the walls to surround the area which will be a soccer field one day. We asked how we can help. Peter especially was interested in this with his family background in construction. They are opportunities for summer work in the future here. They said they are looking for grass turf and if we know of any company that is redoing their fields they could recycle the old artificial turf. We found out that they had enough money to lay the foundation and pillars for the five story addition to their building and then had to stop last summer because of lack of funds. If they do not get funds soon they will have to redo the pillars and foundation because the rain and changing seasons will ruin the pillars and exposed foundation. They have a donor that will match up to $100,000 but they have had no time or money to start fundraising. My team's ears and eyes were greatly softened and opened and we had only seen the clearned land.

Then we went to the rented high school building and immediately my students all said . .. this is MOUNT EPHRIAM! they saw in that building the old King's. (I was laughing inside and refrained from saying . .. . .. why do you think we want to partner with this school! What have we been saying all along !!!!. . .. . ) however at the same time I realized that now they are seeing it and believing it and experiencing it for themselves and that is what it has taken for your students to truly understand this trip and this opportunity, so Praise the Lord!

Then we ate lunch, oh a glorious lunch . . .. Pizza. Fresh bread dough, non greasy cheese, chicken seasoned with fresh herbs . .. I think I am hungry as a write this . . .sorry.

After lunch was the high school chapel and God did an amazing thing through Jasmin and the students she supervised in a skit. Jasmin will have to share it with you more. But basically it came down to a last minute idea, no time to rehearse it, and God truly giving them His message for RWCS and team TKCS in chapel today. I had goose bumps watching. Josh floored me with one of his lines and I asked him after words if he knew he was going to say that and he didn't. Again ask your students about it.

Drew and Kyle with God's strength alone poored out their hearts in testimonies to the students. The students were still and listening to every word.

There is so much more but I want to leave you with this. Tonight we had a dinner with teachers and students and spent time sharing how we have impacted each other. As their students shared they said they have been amazed at the TKCS team's ability to be flexible, open about our weaknessness, sharing our strengths, we have been willing learners, and they kept repeating how they have seen us work together so well as a team. We shared with them that we are amazed at their hospitalitity and their fluency in English, and their bravery in being a light here in Iasi where there is so much darkness.

The evening ended by not ending . .. .even as I speak your students are somewhere in Iasi at a mall with their new found Romanian friends. Before they left Kyle was in my room and he turned around and said "Miss Topham, I'm not leaving."

(don't worry Brenda and Bill I know he will be on the plane home tomorrow but I believe he might leave his heart behind) Although we leave here tomorrow in body we take Romania with us in our hearts and all of us will leave a piece of us behind. I see already the future work to be done here and I see already that God has deeply touched some of your students to be those workers (parents I thought I would give you warning now, be ready)

Tonight they will call you one last time on skype or on my phone, we must leave this laptop behind. My parents will contact you thursday night approximately 9:30 pm to tell you we have landed safely at JFK and on our way to TKCS, you can expect us to be at the school by 11:30 pm. (thanks Mom and Dad!)

JET LAG HEADS UP, its easier coming home, when we land we will have been traveling since 10 am thursday so about 12 hours of travel, your students will probably sleep on the plane and it will feel like 7 am to us when you pick us up at midnight, they might be hungry. It is between you and school's NORMAL attendance policy as to your student's attendance Friday. The team has been told there are no special allowances for absences due to their mission's team participation so whatever the normal absence procedure is at TKCS will apply to your students if you do choose to keep them home Friday. Talk it out with your student, as a teacher I have no knowledge of attendance details any questions should be asked to your students because they will know and if they don't call Sharon Angeron.

I can guess that they might have trouble sleeping when you get home Thursday night because remember Romania is 7 hours ahead and it will feel like morning. Which means early FRIDAY afternoon is probably when it will kick in But I could be wrong on this. GOOD LUCK!!

Prayer requests, safety on the way home (which is planned out smoothly), the ability to rest on the plane, that the students as life continues at home can remain passionate about God's lessons from Romania for them, and personally for me as I will be at the school Friday resuming my full teaching load.
